Accountant or bookkeeper?

A bookkeeper records what happened. An accountant interprets it, files it and is accountable for it. Most small businesses need bookkeeping monthly and an accountant periodically; paying accountant rates for data entry is a common and avoidable overspend.

Do I need a LACPA-licensed accountant?

For certain statutory work, yes. For bookkeeping and routine filings, often not. Ask which parts of your engagement legally require one.

Is a monthly retainer better than paying per filing?

If you have employees or VAT, almost always — the work is continuous whether you pay continuously or not. If you are a dormant company or a low-volume freelancer, per-filing can be the honest cheaper option.

Can I use a remote or overseas bookkeeper?

For data entry, sometimes. For anything touching Lebanese filings, NSSF, or dual-currency treatment, you need someone who deals with the local system regularly.

What should I hand over each month, and when?

Bank statements, sales invoices, purchase invoices, payroll changes, and anything paid in cash. Agree the date and keep it.

What happens if I file late?

Penalties, which compound and are not negotiable. This is why the internal deadline question matters more than the fee question.

How do I lower the bill without lowering the quality?

Give cleaner inputs. Consistent invoice numbering, one bank account for the business, and a monthly handover instead of an annual one will reduce the hours more than haggling will.

Should my accountant also give tax advice?

Many do, and it is often where the real value sits. Establish whether advice during the year is inside the retainer or billed on top — this is the single most common mismatch of expectations in the relationship.

Accountants in Lebanon publish hourly rates from $15 to $50, with a median of $27.50. Here is what a monthly retainer should actually include, and why dual-currency books cost more.
